The Making of the Sculpture

The wooden sculpture at the Goetheanum:
The sculpture of Christ was created between 1917 and 1925 in a collaboration between Rudolf Steiner and Edith Maryon. It is carved from horizontally bonded elm wood and is about 9.70 m high.

Rudolf Steiner (1861 - 1925)
Rudolf Steiner (1861 - 1925), Founder of Anthroposophy, inaugurator of biological-dynamic agriculture and of Waldorf Education. The peak of his artistic accomplishments was the design of the Goetheanum building. The wooden sculpture The "Representative of Humanity" stands in its ideal centre.

Edith Maryon (1872 - 1924)
Edith Maryon (1872 - 1924), English sculptor, who had collaborated closely with Rudolf Steiner for many years. She put all her skill and her dedication into the design of the wood sculpture.

The location
The first Goetheanum was made of wood and built out of two semi-spheres. Under the smaller dome the wooden sculpture was meant to be installed at the far end of the stage. Due to lucky circumstances it had not stood there yet when the building burnt down on New Year's Eve 1922/23.

Today the sculpture of The "Representative of Humanity" , also known as the "Group", stands in a separate room of the second Goetheanum in Dornach near Basel (Switzerland).

About the making of the new photographies

In 2002 new pictures of The "Representative of Humanity" were produced in collaboration with the planning commission of the Goetheanum. These images admit a new view on this work of art in as of yet unknown perspectives and details.

A 10 m high mobile scaffold served as light and camera support in order to photograph the work of art from all possible angles.

Freehand photography in 4 m. Some details were hidden so well that only a ladder opened a path to them.

Lighting of the figure of the Ahriman in the cave with elaborate light engineering.

The photographer
Michael Schnur, born 1965, attended Waldorf school Ulm, first photographic experience at the age of 6, studies of medicine in Ulm, Erlangen, Witten/Herdecke, photo exhibitions in Ulm, Herdecke and Dresden. Today general practitioner and additional business in medical photography and photography of nature (medical plants).
